Re: Some more diplomacy options
Some good ideas in this thread. It has been requested to add more options for 'manipulating' approvals and casus belli, and while not all of them make 'real world' sense, they do add to gameplay options.
Some ideas like the 'controlled but not owned' territories (ie West Bank etc) are a bit more difficult to do from both a player and user-interface perspective. It's something that can get confusing when you're playing.
Regarding government types, I'm not sure there is much to be gained by separating American-style Democracies from Parliamentary democracies from socialist-democracies. The latter can be approximately simulated by setting your political leaning to left wing, and while it is true that we don't really simulate an American system (even in the US the in-game elections are now a three party system), the real-life American system is a bit of an oddity in the world. (In fact, trying to simulate Washington is a game in itself )

Liberating nations, and them having a certain period of being inclined to accept diplomacy and trade with you would add much to the gameplay IMO.Some ideas like the 'controlled but not owned' territories (ie West Bank etc) are a bit more difficult to do from both a player and user-interface perspective. Is there a way we could have failed states and/or civil wars? Something like Somalia or Pakistan's frontier provinces?

Dust Off and Hellfish....GREAT IDEAS.
This game has a potential to be diplomatically VERY good.
Keep up the good work BG

I agree, liberating a nation definitely needs to be in. Conquering territory as a means of building an empire is irrevocably a thing of the past. AFAIK, the only one who tried this since 1945 was Iraq in 1990, with the known consequences (discounting attempts of "taking back" provinces under the pretext of freeing their oppressed brethren from a foreign power, since in my book this is a wholly different thing). In our days, empires are built by creating satellite countries. I am certain that this will remain so in the foreseeable future. SR2020 needs a way to allow us to conduct modern-day imperialism, as an alternative to the obsolete practice of territorial expansionism.

Re: Some more diplomacy options
What about embargoes? When you embargo another country, you're saying "I don't want anyone to trade with this country" - no tech exchanges, commodity exchanges, etc. Your allies should reciprocate - they'll honor your embargoes and you're expected to honor theirs.
At some point it would be useful for a UN embargo to kick in.
If a country violates your embargo (US embargoes Cuba, Venezuela trades with Cuba anyway), then the US reacts unfavorably to Venezuela (less approval, cassius belly affected, etc).

More interaction with the world body (UN) would be great. So far I haven't seen much interaction with the UN.

Yeah, the UN gives me stuff sometimes, even when I don't need it, and that's it.

It is a big mistake for BG not to put embargo in the game. It is like creating a zombie game without shotgun.

It'd be cool if nations thet we are whipping threatened to nuke us. Those not likely to have nukes imply they bought the tech from elsewhere.
edits... of course only good if those with nukes occassionally use them in their death throws.
