Supreme Ruler 2020 Review at Strategy Informer 7.7/10

Post by JamieSI »

Both in comparison to the first Supreme Ruler and as a stand alone the game is technically nice to work with. The visuals and sound are both well done, providing for a variance in experience depending on which area of the map you’re playing in. The mouse controls the camera in and out and you can move just about anywhere on the mouse with a right click drag. Information is available from each area by hovering over it where stats are displayed as to what it is and how it’s doing.

I dont want to be to harsh to the recenzent, but i wonder if he really got "into" the game before before giving a final on it. The eco problems the author pointed reminds me the ones of myself when i tried to get a first grip on the previous part of the game ; ). I cannot judge this reviev while i still got no copy myself. Still, just by this reviev i can guess many problems have been solved since the last aprt of the game when whe ministers where preety usless.

It is an interesting review, but leans heavily on first impressions and appearances rather than what the reviewer has learned from playing the game. Time is always short, but still this allows games that look new to get cool points while having flaws that show after some game time be hidden.

I think the reviewer did say that they played for several hours. I wonder how long they take for different games to play them normally.

The comment, "...I never found a really good balance between the extremes." Indicates to me that the reviewer did not have the proper amount of time available to garner a solid handle on the game. For the love of Pete! I am still "finding the balance" with several aspects of 2010... after thousands of hours of play time.

I am not "dissing" the reviewer. We would already be playing our copies of the game by the time he had immersed himself deeply enough to "find a really good balance".

Well ... i've found this a good observation:

Having spent time looking at the forums and user suggestions from Supreme Ruler 2010 it’s obvious that the designers took user complaints to heart and strove for a better strategy experience in 2020. I believe they succeeded.

But I guess we have to wait a little for that

It greatly varies, and hence be forewarned: good or crappy reviews seldom have much to do with the work you have accomplished.

Don't be dismayed, how many people (OK, women) end up buying a vehicle because they like the placement of the cupholders? Answer: a lot.

Some silly "feature" or lack thereof can often, most often, have undue influence on a reviewer. I have seen this more times than I can shake a stick at.

Best quote on this was from a former collegue who went into game development in California. He took a very direct approach. Invited and payed for reviewers to come and visit, and play the game right there -- where any question or problem could be addressed. That helped. But his quote: "The only way to guarentee a good review is to keep them knee deep in gin and hookers."

Oh my mistake, I wrote that this morning, I assumed it was the one posted before, the 8.7 one. Haven't read this yet...

The intense level of detail is both a good and a bad thing. It was fun to be able to see all of the detail on each of the commodities and projects I was dealing with, but at moments it felt like being back in a college economics class
This just sounds like double plus good to me.

yeah, usually judgement is made on details....example. I'm a computer programmer. I don't like JAVA. Why? Because you can't "switch" between booleans(something you can do in B or even in coof old Cobol). That's just a detail, soething easy to bypass, but each time I have to implement against my personal philosophy, I cry. And therefore I avoid JAVA at all costs.

Same for gaming. Each of us has details that he will not be able to bypass, & that will be decisive in its final decision.

To all the forum regulars, I love ya guys, but you're a tough crowd :)

I suppose I should get back to work on the Demo now so that you can all get it soon and pick it apart in excruciatingly minute detail :P

I thought the review seemed decent.

The score was in the range i would expect from a critic (rather than an advertiser, for a game>None of that 10 out of 10 crap.)
Cant of course really judge accurcy, as i havent actually played the game yet :P

Did you notice though, they used the wrong box art ?Kinda makes me wonder if maybe they picked it becuase its SOOOOOO much better than the box art Paradox went with :P
