The ability to...

Post by Dyneomite »

I searched the forum with the search option, however, I couldn't find an answer to the question in my head! :)

Will you be able to name individual brigades/divisions...say, you wanted to name a division after an active one in the US, like the 1st "Big Red One" Division?

I think it would add flavor to the game.

This has been asked before but there had been no decision made last time it was asked. After much debate on the issue Supreme Ruler 2020 will not have the option to rename units. Depending on response post release we may see about adding the feature in an update.

yeah, I knew you'd like us to rebuild that option for SR2020 but there won't be time to make the new engine support it. Gotta set priorities, and it got classified an "uncommonly used function". As I said, we'll gauge response post release and see if it gets added to the new engine.

I name every unit. For me, it is most definately a commonly used function!

Disappointing, and a little odd IMHO.

Feltan,

How do you actually find time to do anything with those units? While I have nothing against naming units, I also crank out batches of units 30-48 strong. If my current batch of 42 Lav units finished production, it would take me most of an hour just to name them. What sort of names are you talking about? "Lightning Battalion", Thunder..." or just adding a production location to the number? Like 467th Austin? Do you name arty, AA and supply too? Just curious.

I know I'm not Feltan (THANKS GOD! :D ) but:

The pause button is very useful ;) and what I do is to name them in order to create a hierachy: IE: 345th Inf / 2-13 Mech (345th infantry btn - same number given by the game engine - 2nd Brigade of the 13th Mech infantry division...

Yes, we shall! :-)

I don't go to Feltans extreme with naming all the units I build, but I do name nearly all my Naval units, CV, BB, DDG, CG, FFG SSN, SSK, SSBN, all get named, I also name any land or air units that have done something pretty impressive.

It isn't hard or that time consuming.

Battalion, brigade, division. "1/2/7" First battalion, second brigade, seventh division. Or, if it is a corps unit: "1/2/III Corps."

Air units are two numbers, squadron and wing: "4/8th Fighter" for instance.

Naval units are random names: HMS Guiness, or USS Viagra, for example.

I get about half my enjoyment tracking stellar units and watching their experience increase.

It is sad that this is apparently no longer an option. I wish they would have asked.

Didnt they ask us about how much we used this function ?

I could swear theres a thread on here started by a dev asking us just that.

I could swear i answered just such a post.

BUT hey, im old, on medication, and have lost "some" brain cells during life :P

So maybe my mind is just playing tricks on me.

/me joins the revolt

As some have stated above, i am too one of those users liking to name the units to simulate some sort of hierarchy (the 1/2/3 thingie).

As i am playing with small countries mainly, this is really a plus as you can get familiar with the units you do have.... having the first division defending my northern part, and the eleventh in the south for instance.

The problem of naming huge batches of 30-50 units at a time doesn't concern me, as i dont ever have to deal with that.
just my two cents.

Hmmm, I can understand the hierarchal numerical thing, I should have intuited that that was what you meant on my own. The thing is this; I have long since accepted that there is no "in game" unit hierarchy. I create my own according to what I can see on the map. If I feel I need ten brigade stacks to defend my northern border, I send them there. I know they are part of that group by looking at the map and seeing them sitting there defending the northern border. Since my situation is often fluid, I find it easier to define my divisions or corps by location/role than to try and stuff some preconceived larger group into the role I need filled. In essence, I could designate divisional names, and in short order I would have brigade stacks from every division scattered all over my area as my needs/plans changed. Also, I find it easier to reconstitute brigade stacks on a "first repaired/first served" basis. If six LAVs and a transport unit finish repair at the same time, they are a brigade. No separating them into four different stacks because they came from different brigades/divisions etc. and then waiting to fill them out with proper units. As for exceptional units, I do not seem to have any problems remembering that the 67th battalion, or the 222nd battalion (etc.) is such a unit, so I do not feel a need to rename them.

All this being said, just because I do not use this function, does not mean I think it should be consigned to the trash heap. As I have stated many many times before, one of the most important qualities of a game to me is choices. The more choices a game contains to make my experience with it unique to me, and unique each time I play, the better that game is. So Goats, count my voice in the throng calling for unit renames to be included in 2020.
