Thats easy -B

Now the hard part, there are games and there are games.

Checkers is a game, so is Squad Leader(though i havent played this in like 25+ years).

Checkers is more popular and probably has sold a hell of alot more copies :P

But do i as a gamer who likes to think and have to problem solve in a realistic setting, want to play checkers or Squad Leader ?

Can you make a version of checkers close enough to Squad Leader to get me to pick it, and yet keep the people who like what checkers is too them ?

Not likely.Id say all but impossible.

Well it could be better for BG to implement flexible/user friendly map-scenario-unit editor, and greater ability to change game. (just look at Civ3 or War3 editor/mods)

Well, those of us who post here represent a pretty hardcore group of players. That being said, when I just want some light entertainment, I will play one of the shorter, combat oriented scenarios, or even start up a save game at some point just prior to a massive invasion or offensive and try something differently. I would have to guess that most of y'all have done the same thing. So let me put this forth.

The "Checkers" part of this game is combat, agreed? The "Squad Leader" part is taking a region and succeeding with it economically and militarily over the long haul. (I always preferred Panzer Leader or Blitz if I couldn't find someone to play Rise and Decline of the Third Reich) So what can we surmise then? If you want to attract more of the "Checkers" crowd, add more of the parts that resemble "Checkers". Put more emphasis in advertising upon the combat portions of the game, and add scenarios where you don't really have to think much about the economy etc. , you just have to take your units and kill the enemy. Keep the good stuff that involves actually running a Region, just don't make the casual customer dig through the complex "thinking" to get to the "entertainment". Trust me, those of us who want the "thinking" parts, will easily and gladly skip over the "entertainment" to get to them.

Make any sense to anyone else?

Anybody want to suggest how to model this weapon?

While you may laugh, at least it was under active consideration -- a bit farther along than some of the techs in 2020!

 Just read about the "Love Bomb." Where do people come up with these things? Sheez, with possible ideas for weapons like the "Love Bomb" one should wonder if the age of new and unique weapons was over. Which I guess is true since military weapons hasn't changed since World War 2, the weapons just have been improved to kill more people and soldiers faster. Oh well, guess its blessing.

There's still one problem with Laser weapons, currently it takes massive electricty. Course then there's the problem of shrinking the equipment down to a size that can be made into a rifle. Laser weapons of right now just heat things up, in 5 years countries could come up with counter measures to prevent their military weapons from heating up. Who knows, in 10 years every soldier be packing a laser rifle and every tank and plane's main armment be a laser. The idea of packing a laser on the F-35 is already in the works. Just seems to me lasers are being focused on AA and anti-projectile defense. Wonder if laser rifles come about, will they be sold at a sportsman's store like all the other military rifles?

If your reread the article, you'll see, they say ""The laser system is powered by a commercially available generator or grid electricity and provides an extremely inexpensive, almost infinite magazine for countering mortar and rocket threats."

So while the electricity usage is probably still a bit high, its no longer so high as to be a main restriction on use.

 But what is the size of this generator? There is alot of commerical generators that are housed in their own buildings. I still say the technology for a senseible laser weapon is close to a decade or more away. Have to remember all new technology has bugs in them.
