Terrain Layer

Post by raybaudi »

Hello,

I was just curious. Does anybody use the Terrain Layer option activated when rolling over enemy fields? I just started using it today. Although satellite imagery looks quite fancy, the Terrain Layer option has its attractiveness too. Besides, it's easier to program the routes your tanks will follow.

I haven't seen any AAR posted on this format.

I just wanted to ask the Goats about the Terrain Layer, What were you thinking when you added this option to the game? Of course, I mean, in the good sense. I really like the option.

Thank You!

I never payed much attention to it myself. The mechanics of combat in SR mean you do not have to.

Well, I kinda think they do. With the Terrain Layer on you can easily spot high ground, close combat, wide or narrow river, movement bonus tracks, defensive terrain, among others hexes. All of these without having to manually set the proper remarking grid.

Besides, it modifies the landscape so you know you're in another country and not always in the same green-colored map.

Thanks!

I am not suggesting the function does nothing, I am simply pointing out it is irrelevant. In some games, you absolutely cannot use a tank on a mountain for example. in this game you absolutely can, so it makes no matter. In addition, there are no, for lack of a better word, "provinces" to fight over, so there is no need to defend gaps or passes etc. Just just encroach on an enemies border and wait for the ai to respond to that very spot.

Now, if you want to roleplay and decide to limit yourself, (which I do often), to using the terrain you can, but it is not neccesary at all.

Thats the gist of what I am suggesting, nifty, yes, required no. :)

Yes, I agree with you, movement should be penalized for tanks in mountains. It doesn't make much sense to watch a whole mechanized army crossing the Himalaya to take China by assault.

Now that we hit the topic, maybe you could enlighten me: impassable terrain, down south (i.e. Antarctica), cannot be crossed, now can it?

It is pink in the Terrain Layer

Thanks!

You got me on that one. There is nothing down there so I have never tried to land troops there. I just looked and am now confused. No matter which of the icons I press I do not get a color change for the ice. Is that a mod or base 6.8.1?

6.8.1 & Ruges Mod.

It looks like we'll have to dispatch troops down there, at least a RECON expedition, pretty much like Norwegians did during early 1900's. The race to the South Pole.

Anybody has ever tried to land on Antarctica?

Pink is non-passable terrain.

After this thread started I did send troops down there, they will not get out of the transport. (Amphib Mech Inf)

CTRL T? I have been typing about the Map Filters. I did not even know about CTRL T :) I do/did play this game alot, but I always play a certain way, so some of the features I have no clue about, like hot spots.. never used them, and obviously the Terrain Layer :P

Now I do, but I still will not use it. :)

Well, the experiment is yet to be concluded. What about parachuting some guys down there? Maybe pedestrian infantry can at least set foot on the Antarctica.
