Aircraft AI improvement

Post by Sebastiaan »

Currently, aircraft have a very basic AI. when ordered to attack a enemy ground unit, the aircraft first intercepts the ground unit (flying directly over it) and then start making cirles on the target. Athough this tactic might be effective for airplaines with a very limited range (<16 km), airplained with medium (>16km) or longer range (30 - 60) ar basicly wasting their planes because they get unnasisary damaged by enemy return fire. This is also the reason why many player complaine that their airforce is worthless, because their airplained get damaged unnessisary from enemy ground units.

If the AI would attack more inteligenly, the pilot would manouvre his airplain in such a way that it can still attack the target without risking beeing shot down. Currenly, to accomplish this, it takes a lot of micromangement from the user, but if used effectivly, a player airforce can easily detroy whole enemy armies without get a sratch. :o I think it would be a nice and relativly simple to implent an AI improvement which tries to preserve his airplaines. This would both improve the AI overal airforce survivebility and improve players gameply experience

You may want to post some revised comments on how this works after update 3 is available. The new unit role screen (accessible in the unit's popup or through advanced orders) now allows you to tell aircraft (any unit actually) to avoid certain engagements. If you select a pack of interceptor aircraft and turn off "land" as a role, they will not move to close air to directly engage ground targets (they will still launch air to ground missiles if loaded and launch authority). This allows you to keep the interceptors guarding from opposing airforces while fighters attack the ground below.

The AI may not be using this much ATM but it may give you new ideas to add to your suggestions.
