You can cancel treaties - just not from the diplomatic window. That is where offers are made. If you want to one way cancel something go into diplomacy and in the third panel for that region - where it shows "items offered to region" "items receiving from region" - select an item and cancel it. This triggers a series of emails where the other region can choose to cancel in return. Breaking a treaty this way has consequences for the party doing the breaking and very little or no consequences if the other party cancels in return.

Does this help?

Well, thats an interesting bit of info. I never noticed it had a reduced penalty if the other party canceled also. Thats good to know.

it's sort like, if someone comes up to you and slaps you in the face - all the people watching gasp in wonder... and if you do the exact same thing - people watching will understand... and if you take it up a notch people may not mind too much either.

i agree with the reasoning you show as behind it and i like the lessened effect itself.

Its just one more thing about the games working i had never noticed.

So no complaint here about it and thanks for mentioning it.
