How to break treaties ?

Demo #2 Playing Portugal

I've a formal alliance with Madrid.
I took some - friendly- fire from them.
I don't like that... so to express my feelings i wanna break with that treaty..

But they refuse to break with any treaties...

So the only way is to declare war.... ?

That or go to state dept, select Madrid, view treaties. You can select the treaty they are offering you and break it but you'll get negative WM and diplomatic consequences.

As of update #2, AIs want those treaties more than they used to...

Or you can send a diplomatic request to pay to break the treaty...the successful conclusion of which raises your diplomatic rating with them.

But you have to pay, which is the caveat.
