Keeps asking for a CD key

I have lost my original sr2010 key, found the (must remember to write serials on discs, always)
Anyway, that is not an issue, i just bought another copy from stardock/totalgaming and thought i will save myself some downloading time and used cd to install with the new key all went perfect but when I launch the game, it keeps asking for the pesky serial over and over...
I am downloading it as we speak but it is a crawl despite my uber 100mbps metro Ethernet, i can't get past 20-40kbps.
I am presuming there is a difference between cd and the download versions, so is there a way around it?
Can't stand 2020 and need my evil conquest/empire fix. Civ IV just isn't evil enough. You gotta admit there is something utterly satisfying about Nuking Switzerland::)
