A few things about unit experience..
I saw quite a large number of people who are not using the training option of units.. But I can strongly recommend training units.
It may seem to consume much time and money to train, but units with fewer people (like aircraft) are far cheaper to train.
And for the first training, the unit gets little experience, (about 6-7 i think) but if you keep on training (I'm talking about "wargames" btw), you can reach 100 with 6 or 7 trainings as far as i can remember. Training gives more experience each time you do it. And 6 months of training is not so much for a pilot, isn't it?
Perhaps those who haven't been using training should give it a try.
And also, there may be a bug making the units that have experience gain experience a lot faster. For instance, I have a CG-1164 Slava Ship which reached -"1288"- experience with performing quite little action..

Training is way too expensive.
While I agree it is a good idea, the training option is too expensive by over a factor of 100. in SR2010, training a mech/tank brigade of around 5-7 battalions will run you around 5 billion bucks for a 30 day field exercise.
I can tell you, with a high degree of confidence, that real world an entire division (@20 battalions) can go in the field for a training exercise for 30 days for well under $50 million -- and that includes some live fire exercises.
It is a wonder concept and the mechanics work fine -- the price tag is just so out-of-whack as to make it not practical.

As many of you know I am an advocate of using a name convention to organize forces in 2010. One specific benefit of this is that as experience accumulates, it is concentrated in specific brigades and divisions, not dispersed as you get when randomly/opportunistically assigning battalions to engagements. I used to basically ignore this unit characteristic, but suddenly I realized that I had some rather elite formations at my disposal - without spending either time or money on developing them.
Colorless green ideas sleep furiously [but otherwise, they do not worry and are happy].

Yes, that is true - training cost is determined by the number of ppl in the battalion as I understood - it makes it quite meaningless to train land or sea battalions.
At least the cost to train should've been different for those types of units -
if not the entire training system.

I'm with Il Duce, the best training, in my opinion, is full speed, life or death combat. I'm not referring to the real world, just 2010. I don't bother with naming, I have a knack for recalling numbers and do pretty well remembering which units have been through the most. If my elite unit stacks get scattered some in a mass repair clusterfugg, well, the greener units that get stacked with them soon learn to keep up.
(Edit: I will agree that if it wasn't gawdawfully expensive, I'd make use of training more.)

"wargames/ you can reach 100 with 6 or 7 trainings as far as i can remember." what do you actually refer to? is it like you can give the training order to a unit or what? i don't really understand. the only thing i could find was the amount of money directed towards training (overall).
thanks.
noob here btw!

Yeah you give the order to a unit, for example:
1) Select a unit.
2) In the window that opens click on the Training options (second from the top on the right hand side).
3) Pick wargames, check cost and click the tick.
4) wait for unit to train it will gain 10 or so experience as a result and will take maybe 20days or so.
That how the training procedure works in the game, for training individual units.

One thing is training 1 unit 6 or 7 times and anothert totally different is training 6 or 7 times 50 units... Not to mentiontion if you are doing that while you are engaging the enemy.... In SR2010 tranning is useful, yes, but too expensive and when you applied to lots of units, it is too difficult to manage....
I would like to see in SR2020 not only a cheaper trainnig but also an option that allows us to train an unit (in wargames, for example) until it reach XX experience. Also, I would like to be able to give more than one specific trainning to a unit (Urban, Mountain, desert, etc)...
And it would be nice too if the AI learns to train its troops...

At least during peacetime, the easiest way I've found to train troops is to rotate brigades through my bases.
First off, I have my units organized into brigade stacks with 3-5 arranged around a single military base. This way I can train one brigade per base. When they finish, I move them off of the base and give another brigade stack an order to train.
The only reason this breaks down is because I'm too preoccupied during wars to continue managing the rotations. I like your idea about "train until X experience" though. Also, if we get a unit hierarchy implemented in SR2020 (or if you simply rename ALL of your units in SR2010 with brigade-based names) you don't have to worry about keeping track of which units belong to which stacks and can train multiple brigades simultaneously.
Oh, I also drastically slashed the costs for training, so training a brigade of 7 battalions only costs about $25-50 million or so.

I have been using only the specific terrain-related training options, but have only a feel for their benefit (e.g., Urban, Jungle, etc.). Does anybody have any info or experience with whether being "urban trained", for example, really helps when fighting in cities (or any Close Combat situations?) beyond the minimal bump to experience the unit gets?
