Carriers Capicity

Post by Fantnet »

I was looking at the equipment database and the Charles De Gaule Carriers has a larger capicity than the US Nimtz Class. This needs to be changed because the Nimtz is a super carrier and the De Gaule had design problems that limited it size and aircraft carried

I believe that all the carrier and transport boat values have been changed since the last beta (they were generally incomplete), but I'll have to wait for Chris to answer about the exact details of the DeGaule versus the Nimitz...

The Nimitz now carries a little less than 80000 tons and the De Gaulle is just below 40000 tons but this is the capacity for cargo. We added seperate values for aircraft when we implemented carriers. The Nimitz can carry 4 squadrons, the De Gaulle, 2.

By making the limit on squadrons rather than the number of aircraft is going to force some tough decissions about whether to have a recon, ASW, or fighter on board small carriers. That is assuming most will have at least one unit of intercepters.

Yeah, that is a bit sucky, but otherwise the player needs to 'unit count' and add up the number of planes in various formations to see if they can fit... plus as they get damaged, more will fit, and if they come back from repair then less will... that might be a bit more realistic, but it is more difficult to play.

By considering a squadron to be a full 'entity' with support and C&C requirements, it can be argued that it makes sense to consider the limit by squadron instead of by number of aircraft. Overall it's a good comprimise.
