F-16A/B Air Defense Fighter (ADF)
Under $279 million October 1986 contract, 279 F-16A/Bs modified for U.S. North American Air Defense Command interceptor mission flown by Air National Guard squadrons.
APG-66(V)1 radar upgraded to support Sparrow and AMRAAM BVR missiles; communications and navigational systems improved, including provision for Global Positioning System (GPS ) receiver and Have Quick II radios, Teledyne Advanced Identification Friend or Foe (IFF) receiver, night searchlight for passive identification.
Can carry 2 x Sparrow, 6 x AMRAAM or 6 x Sidewinders. Also can be fitted with 600-U.S. gal (2,271-liter) drop tanks and drag chute. Flight tests began in March 1988; first Sparrow test-firing occurred on 18 October 1988. IOC in summer 1989.
