During an escort mission, how far off the path will ,the escorts go to attack targets. ?

Say due to some miraculous (sp) circumstances i can see all of the enemies forces.
Will escorts travel to every area they can reach and see a target and attack said target ?

OR

Will they only move so far from those they are escorting in order to attack something ?
If so , how far ?
