We are now considering the issue of whether Anti-Air and Artillery units should be able to capture enemy territory or not.

For example, the SSI Panzer General series do not allow these two unit types to capture objectives. We currently do, but as we have had to make some exceptions (ie supply trucks cannot capture territory), the question arose as to whether we should allow these types to capture.

It should be noted that the type of 'capture' we are talking about here is the 'walk on and take control of the land' type, in that enemy units have been destroyed already.

Thoughts?

I suppose the line of thought is that Artillery and Anti-Air units would not be equipped/prepared as most other units are to "exert control" over civilian territories, and such is the reason that they would not be able to capture.

Certainly, this is very true with Supply Trucks, that have no attack value at all; Artillery and A-A units have very limited attack value, generally used for defensive purposes, and so it could follow that they could be considered 'non-capturing' units as well.

What does having control mean in terms of benefits? If granting supply or LOS then probably yes. If controlling civilians then probably no.

I would be tempted to vote no on this one, in the same manner as supply trucks or lightly armed/unarmed scout vehicles (like jeeps/hummers?). Not sure if these are included in the game as separate units anyway...

The concept of every hex having some form of civilain population still strikes me as kinda odd.

Am I wrong, or does as I currently think each military unit in real life have some sort of security force attached to it/part of it/ in it ?

By giving units with 'ground fire power' (ie infantry, tanks, etc) the ability to take & hold hexes, we're somewhat simulating this concept of 'attached security forces'.

As for the Artillery and Anti-Air, we're currently testing them without capture capability, thereby having those particular units not include this 'security force' feature.

So far it works OK as long as the Artillery or A-A units are attached or escorted by other units (recon, infantry, anti-tank), which would generally be the case in real life.

I means we have to be careful to not charge with our Artillery units in front, which also is generally frowned upon in reality

Artillery & anti-air are given the same basic training that all soldiers recieve, and they do have the weapons. I don't see why they couldn't hold a hex as long as there is not an active uprising - then they would call in the infantry, as they should. This is certainly not thier primary role, but it is one that they should be capable of.

They do currently hold ownership of territory... they just can't capture new territory...
