I prefer the first, one with the green bars. It's more visual.
Though you could also make a Civ III-like system, where there is a green bar on the front, for the force of the first unit, and a few white lines below for stacked units.

George has finished the latest draft programming of huds now so we should get some updated screen shots of the hud posted in the next day or so.

I think everyone will be pleased. There is even a way of changing the hud on the fly to give more exacting details.
