Next game speculation

Post by dust off »

My wish list would be a less micro manage, more strategic modern world sim game.

But my money would be on BG going for a WWII game.

Come on BG give use a hint, or is that you have not decided yet?

My money's on a cold-war era setting....
I would agree that a bit less micro-mgmt and a bit more strategic focus would be nice.

I'd hope for a very similar setting, certainly not the Second World War or Cold War, as making gameplay and AI model known historical progression is something far beyond what they're doing now and I think such a jump would turn out ugly/rushed.

Not that this means a lot, but I wouldn't mind an abstracted 'not this world' setting with vaguely familiar components. Just because it's a fantasy doesn't mean it has to be tech-spiffy and ultra modern.

I wouldn't expect a contemporary scenario to play out with historical accuracy... But in that respect, an engine that didn't do the known history justice (with all its perverse twists and stranger than art endings) would probably not get the respect it merits.

Gee... now how would you model Mr. Bush's fantasies of military domination?

Maybe the exploration/colonisation/conquest of the solar system? It would be interesting to try with more realism in the economic side of things. (you know...more detail than "I can build ten spaceships and 5 colony pods..." Something sci-fi but not over the top "take over the universe".

Whatever they are up to, if they put half as much effort into it as they did 2010, it will rock. :D

I all ways wanted an altered history game. Like what if's. What if Japan never bombed Pearl Habor. What if Germany made an atom bomb. There could be nearly umlimited examples of what if's.

I'm hoping that it won't be based on WW2 - the EU engine games are probably better suited for it, and it's been done to death anyways. WW1, while hard to do would at least earn some points for being mostly untrodden territory.

A hypothetical setting based on the Cold War like Il Duce suggested would be cool. It would be a nice change from the current day one and allow for more fleshed out government and diplomacy mechanics, and even things like Hobbesian standoffs.

Not that it matters all that much. I'd probably still buy it if it turned out to be Hello Kitty's Nuclear Rainbow Death War 2020 (okay, especially if).

I'd enjoy a cold war if like others have said player didn't have to stick rigidly to historical path. I'd like it even better if the game could play through the cold war and beyond the present.

My feelings are that the present day world events provide enough scope for a great sim. Add to it near future competition for top-dog status then there's plenty of gaming material.

ROFL !!! !!! HKNRDW2020 !!! You are right, I'd buy that in a heartbeat if it existed.

Berg, have you ever read any books by Harry Turtledove? If not, you ought to check him out. He writes the best alternate history fiction I've ever read.

Maybe they will concentrate on the econ side and come out with Sim Tycoon 2020? :P

I'll check into his books. And i didn't mean to focus on ww2 with alternate history. Even in modern times. Like what if Israel never bombed the nuclear reactor, in turn Saddam was able to make nuclear weapons and then invaded Kuwait. I think the US would have acted differnet to the situation. Might not even bothered to start the 1st Gulf war. Even with the cold war. What if the US didn't try to contain communism. As I said there is nearly unlimited alternate history.

Well, you can always take it a step further back as well. What if the Persians/Alexander/Romans (pick one) had survived through history pretty much intact? Unified middle east and not an islamic one at that... What if cavemen had invented gunpowder? (lol ok I know that is getting silly)
Turtledove has a great series based on if the South had won the civil war. Politics and world wars are a real trip in North America in that circumstance. The Union and Germany as allies in WWI... :o

 yeah it got silly. And got another what if. What if the UN never came about. I know the UN isn't like it was when it just started but imagine if it never came about. I think the world would be a totally differnet place. World War 3 might had happened during the cold war. Actually it be the 2nd world war. The 1st and 2nd that happened to me like alot of the others believe is that its was the same war with some breathing room between them. Just like both the gulf wars and the wars that happened between the arabs and Israel.

Does this mean I'll have to change my identity to Nikita?

And just think how the Hello Kitty affiliation would solve the whole graphics question. Just add a little camo.

I would be happy with more micromanagement and a little more economic aspect game. I very love SR2010, but the "have to war" thing is a little disappointing.
