An Alliance does not mean that both countries have to be at war...

All the European countries are 'Allied' and not all of them declared war on Iraq...

In WW2 The Americans were allied with the British but didn't declare war until pearl harbor they supplied us British with tanks, Guns, Food etc...

A Mutual Defence Treaty on the other hand should be honoured...

If its not a serious effect needs to happen...

Like WM Subsidy and Approval taking a Swan dive...

As well as international Oppion...

When you sign a Mutual Defence Treaty you are making a serious commitment to help them... They should do the same...

I have an Idea though...

Maybe we could have a way of stopping Agressive AIs getting the Human player into wars all the time...

With Mutual Defence maybe have the player 'Advised' to go to war if the AI if that player is not the agresser...

But maybe they could add two diplomatic options....

Mutual Agression where if they attack you will help them

and you could put these both in a Option of 'Full Military Support' where you will help them if they attack or are attacked...

This option if not honoured should a have a serious repercusions too...

About the Non-Agression Pact if a player breaks it there should be as much drop in DAR and WM Approval Drop as when you declare war on some1 with 0% Beli Rating....
Supporting Nuclear Power in the UK.

Just because the Japanese happened to build one near multiple fault lines doesn't make them any more dangerous than they were before the Earthquake.

They were not part of the Alliance between Britain and France (which became known as the Allies), until they were attacked in 1941. They supplied both Britain and Russia with supplies and guns but that does not constititute an official alliance.

Im my opinion a 'formal alliance' is a bigger commitment to each other than a mutial defence treaty (like NATO).

Yes, because formal alliance means that there is free access and line of sight.

But these all are theories. The most needed thing in the game is AI formal allies or mutual defenders to honor THEIR duty and help each other or you when at war.

Usually they stay passive, waiting their turn to be attacked. This is very unrealistic.
