Re: Supreme Ruler 1936?

I'm sure you know your business better than I. But won't everyone just play hearts of iron instead?

Re: Really, fox news?

With good reason. I would have found it a little offensive if I were a fan of primes myself. My maths department linked it along with:
Students: pack your bags and go home. We may have to rewrite large chunks of the degree syllabus, we'll let you know when it's safe to come back.

Sorry.

Really, fox news?

http://www.foxnews.com/science/2013/02/05/worlds-largest-prime-number-discovered/#ixzz2K7JLoQdk Prime numbers, which are divisible only by themselves and one, have little mathematical importance. Yet the oddities have long fascinated amateur and professional mathematicians. http://1.bp.blogspot.com...

Re: It is Global Warming Comrade!!

Tkobo (and in fact Chris, since I believe you've fallen for this one). The article cited a study claiming that there was an annual acceleration in ice loss of around 8 billion tons per year per year. It then proceeded to claim that because the margin of error in the ice loss per year is nearly as la...

Re: Need for algorithmist

Yeah, so I'm no good at the actual programming. But I might take a look at this later and if I do find a shortcut I'll let you know about it (although I'd be unable to tell you how to code it).

Re: Need for algorithmist

Ok, I looked on the "tree" for previous problems, and it seems you're not thinking of permutations as functions in this case. So obviously by "inverse" they mean something else, and that's where the confusion came from.I think I cleared it up now though: they mean swapping round some of the numbers ...

Re: Need for algorithmist

I suspected as much, but I can't find the definition for reversal anywhere except on your link and I don't quite understand what it means by "inverting some interval of the permutation". If it means an inverse as I understand it (g is an inverse of f if applying g to the codomain of f returns the do...

Re: Need for algorithmist

It is about a minimum of permutations. Already met permutations excluded, e.g. 0123456789 --> 1023456789 (counted) --> 0123456789 (excluded). Yeah, unfortunately I'm still totally lost. I do maths, I think we use different terminology. That said, if the problem is anything difficult I'm still a yea...

Re: Need for algorithmist

Isn't that rather too specialised a question to ask in a forum this small? (also since you got that far I'm guessing you understand: what exactly is a reversal? I don't understand how it can be, as they say, an inverse of some interval of a permutation since the first problem involves the identity p...

Re: It is Global Warming Comrade!!

I think applying reason in order to understand the concept of acceleration is a fine idea. Nevertheless, hardly anybody expects the Greenland ice sheet to melt in less than several centuries. You're attacking a strawman.

Re: It is Global Warming Comrade!!

I'd feel more comfortable if that article were written by a scientist; as it is, it's ambiguous enough that I'm unsure of exactly what it's saying, but my best guess is: annual acceleration in ice loss is much lower than previous research has suggested, roughly increasing by 8 billion tons every yea...
